Positioned at the intersection of virtual reality and installation art, Container makes visible the 'invisiblized' bodies enabling our consumer society. Confronting slavery through an ever transforming shipping container, the past becomes the present, the invisible become visible. We witness the shards of society: the ghosts of the past and living spectres of the modern world.
To extend this critical confrontation beyond traditional gallery spaces, Container operates as a series of site responsive public interventions situated across South Africa’s key port cities. By embedding the virtual reality experience directly into public urban landscapes, such as shipping hubs, beaches, and city plazas, the project deliberately interacts with the local geography and historical resonance of each site. Through these localized interventions, Container serves as an active tool for civic engagement and dialogue, compelling public audiences to confront the invisible economic structures and historical traumas woven into the very fabric of their own cities.
